This week was rather passive comparing to previous one. First of all, OMX Riga index experienced +2.22% change, while BALTIX index faced a slight decrease of –0.54%. Secondly, the total turnover of both Baltic Main List and Baltic I-List showed a decrease of 2,009,576.28 EUR, as the Baltic I-List turnover almost halved from 465, 491.53 previous week to 260,372.17 EUR this week. The turnover of the Baltic Main List faced the decrease as well. This week it was 2,006,997.41 EUR while previous week it amounted to 2,112,001.77. Thirdly, total number of deals in both Lists reduced form 963 deals to 613. 4 companies out of 6 experienced a positive change in the share price value in the Baltic Main List and 3 companies out of 5 showed positive change in share price in the Baltic I-List as well. In the Baltic Main List the highest growth of +4.4% belongs to Ventspils Nafta (VNF1R), the second highest growth is the increase of Latvijas kuģniecība (LSC1R) share value of +3.55%. The most successful gainers of this week in the Baltic I-List are Latvijas Balzams (BAL1R) with the change of +4.87% and Rīgas kuģu būvētava (RKB1R) with +3.47% change.
Latvijas Balzams (BAL1R), the largest producer of alcoholic beverages in the Baltic States, is the top-gainer of this week with the increase of the share value +4.87%. In the middle of the week, company announced about its plans to move production of sparkling wines, ciders and light alcoholic drinks out the present location in Riga to new production facilities, which are planed to be built outside the city. A tender for a land plot purchase is announced to implement the project. They look for a place within a 30-kilometre radius from Riga limits, located in industrial territory, and total area is not less than 6 hectares. Growing demand on the light alcoholic drinks causes the need for the expansion and investment as well. According to information of State Revenue Service, ciders and sparkling wines of AS „Latvijas balzams” were the most popular alcoholic drinks in 2006. We can conclude that demand on the production of the Latvijas Balzams (BAL1R) will be growing. Thus, supply will be growing as well, especially, after expansion. Consequently, BAL1R will strengthens its positions on the market and the stock market as well.
The share price of the largest chemical - pharmaceutical manufacturer in the Baltic States Olainfarm (OLF1R) showed a slight increase from 4.04 EUR per share to 4.11 EUR. But a significant information was published in Dienas Bizness on February 12. Olainfarm (OLF1R) has signed an agreement with an international pharmaceutical company about the production and supply of a new medicine to the world market. The agreement provides that Olainfarm (OLF1R) will produce the medicine world-wide sale of which will be promoted by both Olainfarm (OLF1R) and its partner. The said agreement may potentially mean the biggest export deal ever of finished form medicines produced in Latvia to the western markets. Such positive announcement might have positive effect on the share price of OLF1R in future.
