RTS (Moscow) Market Overviews

Russian Stock Market Overview 13/11/2006 – 17/11/2006

This week’s overall volume of turnover in Russian Stock Exchange market was 212 672 410 €. The Russian stock exchange index decreased by 1,04% during this week from 1706.67 to 1688.97. The companies that influenced change of the index very much were Sberbank, Rosneft, Surgutneftegaz, and Rostelekom. In the overall, the main driver of the index were oil companies due to decrease in the world oil prices.

Surgutneftegaz (SNGSP): The price of the shares of the company went down during the week by 5,73%. No doubts, that the significant fall in the world oil prices were the main factor which influenced the decrease in the share price of Russian oil company. It is a well-known fact that the share price of Surgutneftegaz usually sharply responds to the instability of oil prices.

Rosneft (ROSN) was one of the unluckiest companies this week and was one of these which influenced the most the decrease in RTSI. It saw 94 trades during the week and faced a noticable decrease in the price of its shares (-2,25%). According to analysts, besides the instability in the world oil market, it is likely to have happened due to the fact that Morgan Stanley will not include from December 1 Russian state oil company Rosneft in the stucture of Morgan Stanley Capital International's benchmark emerging market indexes.

Sberbank (SBER) made 34 deals with total turnover 7418492 EUR which proves this company was one of the most successful during the week. Analysts consider that the news about the long-expected decision to include Sberbank shares into Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) index from the beggining of December influenced change of the price very much.

It is worth to mention that Rostelekom (RTKM) faced one of the biggest increases in share price during the week (+7,87%). The company faced 14 deals in the total amount of 3626757 €. The main reason for this significant rise was the news that the Federal tariff service of Russian Federation approved the new tariff plan for fixed line services and Rostelekom tariffs for long-distance network.
